Bridges great as Bad in 'Heart'

What it lacks in originality, "Crazy Heart" makes up for in delivery.

As has-been country great "Bad" Blake, Jeff Bridges delivers one of his most complete performances. He has already won a Golden Globe and is an Oscar front-runner.

We first meet Bad as he shows up for a gig in some dusty Southwestern town. The long-haired, bearded troubadour hauls himself out of his ancient SUV, zips up his pants and rebuckles his belt. (His middle-aged spread needs to breathe during those long drives.)

'Valentine's Day' woos movie-goers

LOS ANGELES — The star-studded romance "Valentine's Day" wooed audiences with a $52.4 million opening weekend, easily grabbing the No. 1 spot over the holiday that shares its name, accor ding to studio estimates Sunday.

"To have a movie titled 'Valentine's Day' on Valentine's weekend was a no-brainer that absolutely worked," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

Directed by Garry Marshall ("Pretty Woman"), "Valentine's Day" was a celebrity bonanza. The cast includes Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Queen Latifah, Jessica Biel, Shirley MacLaine, Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner.

JACKSON DVD OFFERS TANTALIZING LOOK AT WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN

"Michael Jackson's This Is It" isn't a movie, exactly. It's more a collection of choreographed walk-throughs and semi-sung performances captured during rehearsals for what would have been Jackson's splashy return to the concert stage, had he not died suddenly last June at the age of 50.

To characterize it as footage rather than a film may sound like a criticism; it isn't. Actually, the behind-the-scenes, high-class-home-movie vibe of " This Is It," coupled with the excellent extras that appear on the DVD ($29) and Blu-ray ($40) versions released Tuesday, make this glimpse of/tribute to M.J. a more satisfying experience now that it can be viewed in one's own living room. Somehow watching the film at home sets a more appropriate tone for a documentary that itself could have been a special feature on a Michael Jackson concert DVD.

Naturally, people who haven't seen "It" may be tempted to pore over each frame, searching for clues that Jackson was a man addled, ill and days away from his own demise. They won't find them. Granted, Jackson never completely belts out any of his many hits, from "Wanna Be Startin' Something" to "Beat It" to "Black or White," noting more than once that he's trying to "save his voice" for the series of 50 dates he was about to embark on at London's O2 Arena. But he still hits the high notes in "Human Nature."

Is there an American who has advanced beyond the sixth grade unfamiliar with that most affirming morality tale in American history - the story of Branch Rickey, Jackie Robinson and the integration of Major League Baseball in 1947? As symbolic and ingrained in the national fabric as the game is, it was seen, and has been recalled, as an American tipping point. Because baseball in America had mirrored the nation's racial practices for decades, the event was perceived as momentous and precipitous because here, baseball foreshadowed nationwide, federally-imposed and endorsed desegregation, coming as it did seven years before the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education. As the story goes, once Major League Baseball rejected the "separate but equal" fiction of the Court's 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson decision, it was inevitable that the case was on its last legs. It is not the only story that can be told, however. The same facts and information that lead to the popular tale can also lead to a different one; one which is equally illuminating in that it shows men in a powerful institution doing all they could to beat back a rising tide against them - the tide of integration - that threatened their status and way of life. One which is not so much a story of equality but one where these powerful men fought to maintain control over the process of integration such that the resulting "story" was one about equality only in its most superficial sense, with true equality having been delayed and denied to the majority of African Americans despite the success of Jackie Robinson. For in the end, although the powerful men may not have been able to alter history itself to the extent they desired, they could, however, greatly affect how that history was recounted and remembered. The popular story of the integration of Major League Baseball is perhaps one of the most resonant and powerful in our culture. But, at its core, it is simply that: a story. One that, like most stories, is complete with gaps and inconvenient facts left on the cutting room floor. What follows is another story - one that sweeps up these facts and picks them out of the dustbin of history in order to tell a far different tale of the integration of "America's game." It is likely that the powerful men would be far less pleased with this story, exposing as it does their flaws, fears and misperceptions. But that is precisely why they have chosen not to tell it.
