Wichita Public Library to present Oscar-nominated short films

For the 26th year, the Wichita Public Library will host screenings of Academy Award-nominated short films, in programs to be held Saturday through Feb. 25.

“Nominees always cover a wide range of topics and this year is no different,” said Sarah Shetlar, who organizes the event.

Nominees include films from Japan, Pakistan, Norway, Ireland, Canada — and Wichita. “Incident in New Baghdad” (nominated for best documentary short) tells the story of former U.S. Army Specialist and Wichitan Ethan McCord.

‘Lorax’ pits tree-huggers vs. clear-cutters

From the day it was published, Dr. Seuss’ environmental parable “The Lorax” has courted controversy. Not much to check out in ‘The Innkeepers’

Writer-director Ti West goes where many — especially Stephen King — have gone before with “The Innkeepers,” a handsome-looking but utterly flat-footed tale of a haunted hotel.

The Yankee Pedlar, which looks to date from the early 19th century, is a money-losing operation about to close for good. But desk clerk Luke (Pat Healy) wants to find proof of the hotel’s ghost — Madeline O’Malley, a bride who died there — before it closes its doors. And the nerdy, dullish Luke has enlisted Claire, played by Sara Paxton (“Last House on the Left”), to help him.

But they don’t want video of this Corpse Bride. No. They’re only after audio. So no “found footage” “Blair Witch”/ “Paranormal” comparisons here. “Innkeepers” is nothing like those films. (Mainly because it isn’t scary.)

In most categories there were no clear-cut favorites at the 84th annual Academy Awards. But when it came to fashion on the red carpet it was a different story. Fashion predictors expected to see lots of color, “statement dresses,” some prints and long sleeves. Turns out there seemed to be something for everyone, including the predictors. There were more white gowns than expected and no prints.

Wow, can you imagine getting ready to be seen by millions of viewers, not counting those in the live audience? That would be tough duty. No wonder most stars now choose to depend on a professional fashion stylist.

Milla Jovovich was one of the first arrivals on the red carpet, wearing a beautiful white, one-shoulder gown by Elie Saab. Robin Roberts of “Good Morning America” also wore a tight, white sequin gown. But what a treat when Jennifer Lopez, wearing Zuhair Murad, and Cameron Diaz, wearing Gucci Premier, strolled across the stage to present the best costume design award. Both wore shimmering white/silver gowns. Pure Hollywood.
