Dead Zone: In 'The Happening,' written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the big surprise is just how bad the movie really is
Film: M. Night Shyamalan achieves something amazing in his latest film, The Happening. Not only has he made a film about people killing themselves, his film actually makes people want to kill themselves. Seriously, when one character sits in the middle of the street and takes a piece of glass to his own wrist, I thought, ''Lucky bastard.'' Like the wind, which plays a critical role in this movie, The Happening really blows. One of the allures of a Shyamalan film is wondering what the big twist is going to be in the end. Ever since the hairpin turn in The Sixth Sense, audiences have sat on the edge of their popcorn-covered seats in anticipation of the final reveal. In The Happening, the big surprise is just how bad the movie actually is. … (more)

Jokesters: 'Get Smart' is a moderately funny update of the '60s TV show, while 'Love Guru' will leave you annoyed and laughless
Film: It's been six years since funnyman Mike Myers last said ''Groovy, baby'' in the third installment of the Austin Powers franchise, which is also how long it has been since Myers had a live-action hit. (I don't think I need to ask forgiveness for not counting The Cat in the Hat as a hit.) Since that time, Steve Carell has burst on the scene and established himself as one of the hottest comedic commodities in town. As the two went head-to-head last weekend with new films opening on the same day, it's hard not to declare that there's a new king in town. Even though Carell doesn't get a laugh with every line in Get Smart, it's a hell of a lot better than Myers' The Love Guru, which gets mired in muck. Hathaway and Carrell in ''Get Smart'' Get Smart features Carell doing what he does best — being Steve Carell. Playing the slightly bumbling, but always lovable Maxwell Smart, Carell's performance is an amalgamation of many other roles. He's the guy you want to win, but he's going to get a little beat up in the process and repeat every gag one too many times. In the film adaptation of the television show that ran from 1965 to 1970, Smart, an analyst for the U.S. government's CONTROL program, finally — and only — gets his chance to move out from behind his desk when every single other secret agent is compromised. Paired with the Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway), who's just recovered from major plastic surgery (good doctor!), the two head to Russia to stop an arms dealer from sending nuclear weapons around the world. The plot is inconsequential — the movie is about funny lines. … (more)

M Shutterfly: Tiona M's film, 'black./womyn.: conversations with'
Film: Before meeting Tiona M., you might assume she's a little pretentious. No last name? Is this some sort of ''k d lang no capitals please, I'm an artist'' trip? And what's with the title of your movie? black./womyn.: conversations with lesbians of African descent. That assumption couldn't be more wrong. The ''M'' is for McClodden, which she says she abbreviates to save her hearing it mispronounced again. Spell it out, shorten it — it's all fine with her. Same goes for the title of her recently completed documentary in which she has captured her interviews with 49 black lesbians. The titles, the text, are not what's important in her world. What McClodden cares about is the meat. … (more)
