7 Sexy Things

1. Sexy Hike
Let’s face it. We’re a cold people in summer. We know it’s warmer and sunnier over the bridges but it’s often hard to get motivated to cross them. Lake Lagunitas is my favorite summer escape: It’s far enough out in Marin that sunshine is nearly guaranteed. You may have to drive a few more minutes but it’s totally worth it: beautiful views, romantic setting. Pack a lunch, hike and have sex in nature.

2. Take A Bath Together
Have I mentioned it’s cold? You don’t need the rose petals or Champagne to make a whole ordeal out of a romantic bath, just some bubbles and maybe throw in a loofah and salts. Try a few drops of sandalwood oil to awaken the sensual senses.

3. 48-Hour Film Project San Francisco
Final Screenings Thursday, July 24, and Monday, July 28
Roxie Cinema
3117 16th St., 415-863-1087

Last weekend some of your fellow San Franciscans sacrificed sleep in order to make short films. Come check out the inspiring, funny, creative and always-entertaining results. Here’s one—Fancy Coffee Drinks—directed by Steve Muller and David Ultan a few years ago … we had a blast making it.

4. Sex Tip: High Heels “may improve sex life”
If you’ve got no time for the kegels (see last week’s blog), the high heels may also do the trick.  Sure, heels can make the feet swell but may possibly strengthen your pelvis muscles.  I guess everything in life is a trade-off.

5. Conscious Fashionistas
Saturday, July 26, 7pm
Go For A Loop Gallery
1458 San Bruno Ave., 415-819-9652

Who ever really feels they’ve got something to wear? Here you can swap your old favorites for others. “We'll provide a sexy shopping atmosphere and expert advice on which items suit your personality and look.”

6. Sex Tip: Eyes Wide Open
The inclination is to close our eyes during sex, especially during orgasm, but try keeping them open for a more emotional connection: stare into each other’s eyes during foreplay, kissing, the whole shebang until climax.

7. Taxpayers Spend Check on Porn
Maybe you blew it on a new plasma screen or shoes, but according to UPI, many others spent their stimulus check on getting, well, stimulated. If you’re female and you’d like to do the same, you might want to check out www.pornmoviesforwomen.com, which encapsulates hundreds of movies geared toward women and couples, along with a slew of instruction videos.

Saturday May 24, 8pm, at Edinburgh Castle Pub
C’mon you know you’ve fallen into a manhole or two. Local author Wendy Merrill fell into some you may even recognize yourself. I laughed out loud. I know it’s cliché but I really did. Her book’s been described as “the witty, skewed, rueful misadventures of an in-recovery-from-everything bad/good girl as she searches for love, sex, sanity… and herself.” Take the quiz on the website to find out if there’s a bad/good girl inside of you. Wendy will appear with Alan Black, author of Kick the Balls: An Offensive Suburban Odyssey.

7. Six Sex Scenes And A Murder

Thursday, June 12, 9pm
Grant and Green Saloon, 1371 Grant Ave., 415-693-9565

4. Different Strokes

7. Bondage Tape
Available at Good Vibrations

Have you noticed how many beds are without posts these days? Well, meet bondage tape. It comes in mighty handy for blindfolds, bindings or even a makeshift miniskirt. Best of all, it’s ouchless. And, of course, it’s available at Good Vibrations.

3. Carnaval San Francisco
Saturday–Sunday, May24–25 in the Mission

I’ll admit I’ve never been to “California's Largest Annual Multi-Cultural Celebration and Grand Parade,” but I’ve heard some good stories. Something about the “much-cherished occasion for many cultures to come together …. to share in creative expression, the abundance of beauty and community, and the sheer joy and good times” has led to many of my friends to find love in the cultural joy of it all. Two of my friends just got married after meeting at Carnaval.

Sex with Emily: This Week's Sex Menu
My list of seven sexy things this week….

1. Sex in the News: Noisy Sex Lands Woman in Court
A British woman was fined for having loud sex with her boyfriend. Neighbors complained the headboard would bang until 6 a.m. (does her boyfriend have a brother?!) They said it kept them up all night, gave their children nightmares, and basically disrupted their lives for two years. With San Franciscans living so close together I thought I’d issue this as a friendly reminder: These walls are thin. But if you’re lucky enough to have a single-family house or cool neighbors, then I say keep going for it.

2. Ben Feldman’s LAUGH ORGY with Chris Garcia
Thursday August 14, 9pm
Grant & Green Saloon
1371 Grant Ave., 415-693-9565
If you’re tired of couching it with a DVD, try a comedy date night. I have no idea what happens at a laugh orgy but it must be funny, right?

3. Sleeping Around Craigslist
Sat, August 16, 6:30pm
Good Vibrations
603 Valencia St., 415-522-5460
If you’re considering take-out sex on Craigslist or just are curious how it all went down for Anna Reed, check out her talk at Good Vibrations.

4. Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad
Sunday, August 17, 8pm
Red Devil Lounge
1695 Polk St., 866-468-3399
Comedy, music, burlesque and some bad girls who’ve been featured on Comedy Central, HBO and MTV.

5. Clock Bar
Westin St. Francis
335 Powell St., 415-397-9222
Sexy ambiance with sexy bartenders mixing sexy drinks. Enough said.

6. TIP: How To Keep it Hot, Part 1
A universal truth: Your sex life will fade at some point. So try this a pre-emptive move right now: Stop focusing on the all those negative, annoying things your partner does, which probably aren’t going to go away anyway. Instead, try refreshing your memory. Close your eyes for two minutes and remember when you first met, how it felt in your body, and all the things that attracted you in the first place.

7. TIP: How To Keep it Hot, Part 2
I know you’ve heard this before: Plan a romantic evening. But have you ever actually tried it? How about trying just one of these things: a massage, a bath, a sexy game. Build it up through the week. Anticipation is sexy. This one bears repeating because it actually work. Just. One. Thing.

News To Me Inside North Korea

I hope not. Laugh Attack: 'Tropic Thunder' is one of the year's most outrageous, inventive comedies, while 'Pineapple Express' derails itself
Film: Humor is subjective. What strikes me as funny may not be funny to you. There are, however, plenty of crossover areas that make us all laugh together as one. And so it is in the best interest of a comedy filmmaker who wants to reach the largest possible audience to cast the widest possible net. Ben Stiller — the comedically-gifted spawn of the legendary humor team Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara — has been casting wide for about two decades now. As an actor, his aggressive, any-way-but-subtle delivery has met with success in films like There's Something About Mary and Meet the Parents. But he's had a plethora of duds, as well — especially those movies on which he's served as a director (Zoolander flits to mind, and flits away just as quickly). Ben Stiller and Robert Downey, Jr: 'Tropic Thunder' I'm tickled to report, however, that Tropic Thunder, which Stiller directed and in which he also stars, isn't one of his missteps. It may very well be Stiller's solid-gold moment, and is without question the funniest, boldest, most original comedy he's been involved with to date. He has plenty of folks to graciously thank for it, including castmates Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Nick Nolte and, especially, Robert Downey Jr., as well as co-writers Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen. … (more)

Review: ‘The Women’ a flick chicks will hate (MSNBC)

Blurred Visages: Parvez Sharma's documentary examining the struggle of gay Muslims is less informative than it is repetitive
Film: If you think being a gay Republican is a tough dichotomy to reconcile, try being a gay Muslim. In concept, the idea of being gay in a Muslim culture is terrifying. In reality, it could be much worse. According to doctrine in the Muslim community, homosexuality is an act punishable by death. It's a non-negotiable that makes the religious right's mantra of ''hate the sin, not the sinner'' seem open-minded and generous. And as director Parvez Sharma shows in his documentary, A Jihad for Love, it's not a matter of whether to kill the homosexual, but how to kill the homosexual. A Jihad for Love Sharma examines what life is like for Muslims who try to reconcile their life as gay men or lesbians while still maintaining their faith. A gay Muslim himself, Sharma traveled to 12 countries and filmed in nine languages to get his footage. Perhaps more striking than any of the shots or stories captured is the sheer number of faces he must blur on screen. Even men living relatively open lives in Turkey are too afraid to be shown for fear that their families will be harmed back in Iran. … (more)

iReport for CNN
There is more than one CNN. James Earl Jones is always right when he says "This is CNN" but he says that in a lot of places. There's CNN Headline News where you watch "News To Me," along with "Morning Express with Robin Meade," "Nancy Grace," "Not Just Another Cable News Show," etc. […]

Michael Holmes and Eric Lanford

There is more than one CNN. James Earl Jones is always right when he says "This is CNN" but he says that in a lot of places. There's CNN Headline News where you watch "News To Me," along with "Morning Express with Robin Meade," "Nancy Grace," "Not Just Another Cable News Show," etc. There's also CNN en Espanol, CNN.com, CNN Airport Network, the original CNN where you can watch "The Situation Room" and "AC360," and finally there are a whole cluster of networks called CNN International.

CNN International, aka: CNNI or "Internat" as we sometimes call it, is probably the most watched of all the CNN Networks because it's seen in the most places! It's pretty hard to find in North America, (some cable and satellite providers do carry it, usually up in the higher digital tiers) but if you have traveled abroad at all you've probably come across it. I know when I was in Rome (where all I knew how to say in Italian was "thank you," and "excuse me") CNN International was an oasis of familiar faces and familiar language on my hotel TV.

The reason for all that exposition is to explain that "News To Me" has a sister show over on CNN International called "iReport for CNN" which is hosted by that tall guy in the pic above, Mr. Michael Holmes.

Michael and his crew came up to our workstations in the Headline News "loft" to shoot parts of "iReport for CNN" earlier this week. I'm sure it was a friendly gesture, but I couldn't help but notice that they came to us when it was time for them to shoot their show about WEIRD FOOD. Not their show about fine art or fun vacations… no, they came to us with a dare to taste two delicacies they learned about from an iReporter — Fried Coke and Hot Beef Sundae. Mmmmm.

More pictures of Eric and Michael being all "TV show hosty" and a picture of the Hot Beef Sundae:

Charles tastes the fried coke

There's Eric and Michael getting a good laugh at "News To Me" Producer Charles who's trying to choke down a taste of day-old fried coke.

Michael Holmes, Charles Gilbert and Eric Lanford with Fair Food

Keep in mind that while he does have a great sense of humor, Michael Holmes is a proper newsman. He covered the war in Afghanistan, IN AFGHANISTAN, he has interviewed presidents and prime ministers, survived an ambush on his convoy in Iraq, covered the fall of the Berlin Wall and interviewed Tom Cruise. And now, he's hamming it up with fair foods. Who says TV News ain't glamorous?

The Hot Beef Sundae

And we finish with a cherry on top… a cherry tomato that is. On top of a heaping pile of mashed potatoes, covered in gravy and shredded cheese… I think there's some ground beef in there somewhere too. It actually doesn't sound too bad to be honest.

You can watch Eric's fair-food antics on "iReport for CNN" on CNN International (check your local listings) or on their showpage: cnn.com/ireportforcnn this weekend!

Sydney White (The Kent Messenger)
Far too heavily tanned Amanda Bynes stars as college freshman Sydney White in this modern day retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. A teen movie based on this fairytale sounds like one of the dumbest ideas ever, especially after the dire A Cinderella Story, with which this shares a producer.

Put Eric in his place

Eric at the Mall

We talk a lot about "locations" behind the scenes at "News To Me." That's us shooting "on location" at a local mall in the pic above (it was our first air-conditioned shoot in a while, so that was a NICE change of pace). You'll see that shoot in this weekend's show.

Where do you think we should shoot upcoming episodes of "News To Me?" What kind of places say "Citizen Journalism," "user generated content," "viral video," "bald dude with a camera crew" to you? It doesn't have to be anyplace specific, just a general scene you think would fit our style. The beach, a restaurant, train station, grocery store, Fiji? (BTW, we're all really pulling for Fiji. K?)

The criteria for a "News To Me" location varies, but generally the most important thing we look for is YOU. "News To Me" is all about you, so we want to be where you are! We're a little stalkery like that. If you are at a concert, in the park, at the Mall, we should be there too, carrying several pounds of camera equipment, microphones and Eric's custom Louis Vuitton make-up case. Citizen Journalists don't sit at a desk and read the news, they are out in the world experiencing and recording it! That's why we get Eric out of the studio each week on "News To Me."

So far this year we have been to "The Fabulous Fox Theatre," "a Braves Game at Turner Field," "a Journey Concert", "a swank rooftop bar downtown," "the Renaissance Festival," various streets and alleys, on top of a giant piece of granite. All great places, but where should we go now!?

You don't have to be specific, and your suggestion doesn't have to be in Atlanta. We're just looking for the TYPE of place or event you think of when you think of web culture, iReports, the internet. Someplace with free parking would be good too. Thanks!

One for the wine 'farmers'

Fans of wine and wine culture will undoubtedly find much to savor in "Bottle Shock," an engaging, at first lackadaisical but ultimately feel-good experience.

The independent film, which was a hit on the film festival circuit, is in limited release and starts a Wichita engagement today.

It's based on the true story of a blind wine tasting in 1976 Paris in which wines from California's Napa Valley scored a shocking victory over France's noble wines.

While the event is factual, the story is dramatized by the husband-and-wife team of director Randall Miller and his co-screenwriter Jody Savin.

The wine-tasting event, which would go on to receive worldwide attention, was the brainchild of Steve Spurrier, an acerbic British wine store owner (a deliciously droll Alan Rickman) in Paris, whose business is suffering from slow sales. He thinks the event will boost his business, so he sets out to America to try to find wines in Napa Valley "worthy" of competition.

To be, sort of

There's a clumsily delivered message about free speech and individuality at the heart of "Hamlet 2," a bawdy, rousing, entertaining but ultimately lightweight comedy.

The story follows drama teacher Dana Marschz (Steve Coogan, a Brit import most recently seen as the director who meets his demise in "Tropic Thunder"), a failed actor whose resume boasts tasteless TV commercials.

He lives in Tucson with his boozy bored wife (the always effortlessly luminous Catherine Keener), and, to make ends meet, a health-nut roommate (a fit David Arquette).

He teaches at West Mesa High School, where his drama class usually consists of two students every year who perform plays Dana has written based on his favorite movies (a laughably horrid take on "Erin Brockovich," for example).

In this new school year, Dana comes to drama class — held in the cafeteria because of space problems — to find students from all over the school district, consolidated into one program because of budget cutbacks.

'Death Race' packs 'em in, but not indies

Random movie thoughts: • Death by murder – I was having a bad Sunday, so I decided to go for a nice, relaxing screening of… "Death Race." Rowwwrrrl.

The movie is all action, and we couldn't care less about the "hero," Jason Statham, except that we're supposed to, because he's obviously defiant and strong. We know this because he has lots of tattoos. And that makes him defiant. And he has big muscles, so that makes him strong.

But it's hard to take "Death Race" as satire when the premise it's satirizing is actually what's happening in real life. Audiences will come for the high-speed races and the graphic violence (it's not called "Death Race" for nothing), much like the "audience" in the movie that subscribes to the violence in the story. I'm confused. Are you condemning your audience? Or pandering to it?

• Downey delights – Isn't Robert Downey Jr. having a phenomenal year? First there was his career re-defining turn in "Iron Man," and then his hysterical portrayal of cluelessly, overly method-y actor Kirk Lazarus in "Tropic Thunder." It's a brilliant performance, and we see the layers of thought inside Lazarus' head, even as he refuses to break out of character. Still to come in November: "The Soloist," with Downey as a reporter who discovers a musical prodigy (Jamie Foxx) now living as a homeless man on the streets of L.A. The film is getting good early buzz.

• Keeping indies alive – OK, film lovers, get out there! After my comment last month about bringing more indie movies to Wichita, Bill Warren called me to say that he would like to get more indie titles here if there were more support. I'm trying, folks. Every Friday in the GO! section I point out what new movies are opening and I especially point out the indies. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a review of "The Wackness," the wonderful Sundance Film Festival audience-award winner that finally came to Wichita — and then stayed for a week. Ouch.
