Bridges great as Bad in 'Heart'
What it lacks in originality, "Crazy Heart" makes up for in delivery.
As has-been country great "Bad" Blake, Jeff Bridges delivers one of his most complete performances. He has already won a Golden Globe and is an Oscar front-runner.
We first meet Bad as he shows up for a gig in some dusty Southwestern town. The long-haired, bearded troubadour hauls himself out of his ancient SUV, zips up his pants and rebuckles his belt. (His middle-aged spread needs to breathe during those long drives.)

Oscar shows its dark side
For your consideration: A pedophile serial killer with a creepy dollhouse hobby, a murderous Nazi who delights in tormenting Jews, and a hateful mother who abuses her daughter and granddaughter.
Hollywood loves a bad boy and so does Oscar, with academy voters nominating several roles this year that are less than cordial, if not downright crazy.
There's Christoph Waltz for his chilling performance as smooth-talking, Jew-hunting Nazi Col. Hans Landa in "Inglourious Basterds"; Stanley Tucci for his scary, blue-eyed turn as pedophile George Harvey in "The Lovely Bones"; and Mo'Nique for her role as Mary Jones, the abusive mother in "Precious."

'Valentine's Day' woos movie-goers
LOS ANGELES — The star-studded romance "Valentine's Day" wooed audiences with a $52.4 million opening weekend, easily grabbing the No. 1 spot over the holiday that shares its name, accor ding to studio estimates Sunday.
"To have a movie titled 'Valentine's Day' on Valentine's weekend was a no-brainer that absolutely worked," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.
Directed by Garry Marshall ("Pretty Woman"), "Valentine's Day" was a celebrity bonanza. The cast includes Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Queen Latifah, Jessica Biel, Shirley MacLaine, Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner.

JACKSON DVD OFFERS TANTALIZING LOOK AT WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN
"Michael Jackson's This Is It" isn't a movie, exactly. It's more a collection of choreographed walk-throughs and semi-sung performances captured during rehearsals for what would have been Jackson's splashy return to the concert stage, had he not died suddenly last June at the age of 50.
To characterize it as footage rather than a film may sound like a criticism; it isn't. Actually, the behind-the-scenes, high-class-home-movie vibe of " This Is It," coupled with the excellent extras that appear on the DVD ($29) and Blu-ray ($40) versions released Tuesday, make this glimpse of/tribute to M.J. a more satisfying experience now that it can be viewed in one's own living room. Somehow watching the film at home sets a more appropriate tone for a documentary that itself could have been a special feature on a Michael Jackson concert DVD.
Naturally, people who haven't seen "It" may be tempted to pore over each frame, searching for clues that Jackson was a man addled, ill and days away from his own demise. They won't find them. Granted, Jackson never completely belts out any of his many hits, from "Wanna Be Startin' Something" to "Beat It" to "Black or White," noting more than once that he's trying to "save his voice" for the series of 50 dates he was about to embark on at London's O2 Arena. But he still hits the high notes in "Human Nature."
